Dear Journal, Tonight was one of those magical summer evenings where the air is warm, and the possibilities feel endless. I stumbled upon a pamphlet in my mailbox about a local fair happening nearby and decided to check it out. It had been so long since I’d allowed myself a carefree evening like this. The fair was buzzing with laughter and music, the smell of popcorn and fried dough filling the air. I wandered through the stalls, pausing at the petting zoo to see the cutest baby lambs, goats, and cows. It felt good to disconnect from everything for a while and just enjoy the simple moments. Then, something unexpected happened. I wandered over to a stage where a local dance class was putting on a demonstration. After their performance, they invited the crowd to partner up and give it a try. Feeling a little unsure but excited, I figured why not? That's when I met Marco. He was standing nearby, and we both nervously smiled before partnering up. We clumsily stumbled through the dance, tripping over our feet and laughing as we tried to follow the steps. At one point, we both stepped in the wrong direction at the same time and bumped into each other—awkward, but hilarious. When we finally made it to the end of the song, all out of breath and flustered, Marco looked over at me and said, "Well, I think we nailed it... if the goal was to invent a new dance entirely!" We both burst out laughing, and that was it—I felt totally comfortable around him. Afterward, Marco suggested we grab something to eat, and he bought me a candy apple from one of the food vans. We joked about how neither of us had eaten one since we were kids, and I ended up getting sticky caramel all over my face. Marco handed me a napkin with a grin and said, “You wear it well, though!” As we stood there, chatting about everything from the fair to our favorite music, he casually asked, "So, do you think there’s a chance you’d like to take on another awkward dance sometime?" We exchanged phone numbers, with Marco adding his name as “Marco (Your Future Dance Partner),” which made me laugh. As we sat there, chatting about everything from the fair to our favorite music, he casually asked, "So, do you think there’s a chance you’d like to bump into me again?" As he reached for his phone I peeked over and saw the most ridiculous picture of a dog in sunglasses. “Don't judge," he said with a grin. "My dog thinks he's cooler than I am." I had to laugh—of course I saved his contact as "Marco and the Cool Dog.” Later, I decided to head onto the Ferris wheel just as the fireworks started. I couldn’t believe my timing. As I was taken higher, I looked out at the city and watched the fireworks light up the night sky, casting a kaleidoscope of colors. I’m glad I took this time for myself, to get away from the day-to-day grind and try something new... and meet someone new. It was definitely a hot summer night! Catch you later, Alex xoxo
